Biography >> Batgirl

Like many heroes, more than one strong-willed woman, determined to fight for the force of good, has adopted the Batgirl name and cowl. The first Batgirl, Betty Kane, fought during the Golden Age as the spunky sidekick to Kathy Kane’s Batwoman, but that incarnation was short-lived.

The most well known incarnation of Batgirl soon arrived to fight alongside Batman and Robin as protectors of the citizens of Gotham City. As a girl, Barbara Gordon, adopted daughter of Gotham’s Police Commissioner James Gordon, watched as Batman protected the city and helped her father bring criminals to justice. She learned hand-to-hand combat in an effort to be more like her hero, and she brought her first criminal to justice wearing a homemade Batgirl outfit intended for a masquerade ball. With this, she joined the Batman family....Show More

Always hungry for knowledge, Batgirl quickly learned the complexities of science and technology and used those skills to create weapons and tools to aid her as she fought alone or with the dynamic duo. But being the Commissioner’s daughter means inheriting the hatred of his and Batman’s enemies. Barbara Gordon fell victim to an act of wicked revenge when the Joker shot her in the spine. Despite every valiant effort by the members of Gotham’s medical community, Barbara would never walk again. Determined not to let this setback get to her, Barbara persevered putting her expertise in technology and computer hacking to use and became the omniscient crime fighter Oracle.

Barbara’s injury left a vacancy in the Batman family, and Batman appeared to go AWOL for a time. In his absence, Helena Bertinelli, also known as the Huntress, took over his role and eventually the role of Batgirl. However, disappointing Batman in battle, he told her to remove the costume, as she was not fit to be part of the Batman team. Again, there was a Batgirl void.

Cassandra Cain, daughter of David Cain of the League of Assassins, was trained from birth in martial arts. Never learning how to speak or read, Cassandra’s language was violence and she killed at an early age. She fled her father’s villainous lifestyle and was recruited by the Oracle when she thwarted her father’s attempt to kill Commissioner Gordon. This act of bravery earned her a spot in the Batman family. Eventually, when Batman was apparently killed by the hand of Darkseid, Cassandra passed on the Batgirl torch.

Stephanie Brown, picked up that responsibility and continued to watch over Gotham, unbeknownst to anyone. The daughter of a villain, Cluemaster, Stephanie had a long history of fighting crime alongside Robin as Spoiler, and eventually as Robin for a short time. When Oracle found out about this, she tried to convince Stephanie to abandon the life of Batgirl. However, defeating Scarecrow, Stephanie convinced Oracle she was worthy of the role and Oracle helped her solidify her spot in the Batgirl Legacy.
