As a young boy, Bruce Wayne was horrified to witness his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, gunned down in an alley in front of his very eyes. Swearing an oath on his parents’ grave to fight the evil and injustice that took their lives, Bruce Wayne began walking the long and treacherous path towards becoming Gotham City's dark avenger, The Batman. ...Show More
Raised by his parents’ faithful servant, Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne excelled in school. He began traveling the world, mastering various techniques necessary in crime-fighting: criminal psychology, forensics and escapology. He also honed his fighting skills, training amongst the best fighters in the world to obtain physical perfection and unmatchable martial arts skills.
When Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham, he discovered that, due to a corrupt police force, he could not fight crime using conventional means, finding it necessary to become more than a man. Knowing criminals to be a cowardly and superstitious lot, Bruce was given inspiration by an intruding bat in his study. He is now of a minc become a bat…a Batman…. to instill fear into the minds of criminals. He designed a black costume with a bat-like cape and cowl and transformed the caverns beneath his home, Wayne Manor, into his crime-fighting headquarters, the Bat-Cave.
From there, Batman began using his genius intellect to create tools and vehicles to help him in his fight. His utility belt alone is equipped with Batarangs, nerve gas, handcuffs and many other weapons. He created an incredibly advanced computer system to assist in his citywide surveillance along with the highly regarded, heavily branded (snicker) Batmobile, Batplane and Batsub.
Batman discovered that, regardless of his vast resources, he would be unable to wage his one man war on crime without assistance. This realization led to the establishment of some very special partnerships. Jim Gordon was one of the few honest cops in GCPD and, while helping Batman, moved up to the rank of Police Commissioner. After having witnessed the deaths of Dick Grayson’s parents during a routine, Big Top performance by the Flying Graysons, Bruce Wayne’s empathy for the boy resulted in the recruitment and training of the very first Robin. Batman’s crime fighting spree had an unforeseen effect on certain Gotham locals: It inspired others to don a costume and take back the streets; one of the more noteworthy citizens being Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl, daughter to one Commissioner Jim Gordon. Batman expanded his crime fighting beyond Gotahm’s borders, entering into a recurring partnership with Superman and becoming an honorary member of the Justice League of America. Batman certainly needs all the
help he can get when facing his vast number of powerful and menacing enemies: Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, Bane and, the worst of all, the psychotic Joker…and that’s the short list.
He fights an almost daily battle with Gotham's criminal underground to uphold his oath, both in and out of costume. Batman's alter-ego, the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, is head of Wayne Enterprises. He is very charitable throughout Gotham, using his company to take on evil corporations such as Lex Luthor's Lexcorp.
