When a young, frail Steve Rogers was denied enlistment during World War II, he agreed to take part in Operation: Rebirth led by Dr. Abraham Erskine. Injected with the Super-Soldier Serum and exposed to Vita-Rays, Steve's body grew new brain and muscle tissue until it reached the peak of human potential. He was named Captain America and created with the intent to become the first in an army of super-soldiers. However, a Nazi spy gained access to the experiment and killed Dr. Erskine. Unfortunately, the secret of the serum died with its creator....Show More
The army decided to make the most of their singular success , turning Captain America into a symbol of liberty to counter Nazi Germany's propaganda. They outfitted the hero with a costume modeled after the American flag, a sidearm and an indestructible shield that could be used both offensively and defensively. He eventually took on a young sidekick also committed to military service, one Bucky Barnes.
Cap and Bucky fought enemies in America and world-wide, the most terrible being the Nazi's attempt at super-soldier creation: the Red Skull. To fight the Nazi regime and the machinations of the Red Skull, Captain America and Bucky teamed up with the Sub Mariner, the Human Torch and Toro to form the Invaders. During the last days of the war, Cap and Bucky were trying to stop a Nazi scientist, Baron Zemo, from dispatching an experimental plane. Riding the plane in mid flight in a last ditch effort to alter its course, a rigged explosion destroyed the plane, presumably killing Bucky and throwing Captain America into the freezing Atlantic.
Thanks to the Super-Soldier Serum coursing through his veins, Captain America entered a state of frozen animation and was later discovered and resuscitated by the Avengers. After joining and eventually leading the Avengers, Cap continued his fight against evil, taking on threats both large and small; whether it was teaming up with the Falcon to take on street gangs, partnering with Rick Jones to fight terrorists, or stopping alien threats alongside the Avengers and Captain Marvel.
Captain America’s enemies themselves were too numerous to count, including a rejuvenated Red Skull, Batroc the Leaper, Kang the Conqueror, M.O.D.O.K., and the Masters of Evil just to name a few. Trouble also came from the U.S. Government itself. Whether it was because of corruption or manipulation, Captain America has, on multiple occasions, given up the title to become a different hero such as Nomad or simply… the Captain.
Captain America has been put through quite a bit: The hardships associated with being a man out of time; enemies and allies (including himself) returning from the dead; fighting in the Secret Wars; a presidential nomination; leading the anti-registration rebellion which led to the Marvel Civil War; terrorist plots and, of course, time travel. Captain America has endured and proved time and again that, as long as there is a need; as long as freedom stands or stands threatened, there will always be a Captain America.
