Frankenstein: when you read this you see the big green monster with bolts jutting from his neck, walking in stutter-steps, moaning and terrorizing torch-wielding villagers. This image was epitomized by Boris Karloff in the 1931 film. Originally, however, Frankenstein was just the guy who created the monster, the protagonist in Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic novel of the same name. The idea of piecing together a man from various dead body parts and reanimating it has been especially resonant in the world of superheroes, so much so that the Frankenstein monster is now a DC Comics villain, and the comic book series Doc Frankenstein, written by the Matrix’s Wachowski brothers, chronicles the monster’s post-Shelley adventures. So make ‘em shout, “It’s Alive!!” when they see you coming in your own Frankenstein T-shirt!
