At first Castle would suppress his violent urges but eventually he could no longer restrain the voice which urged him to kill and promised him a never-ending war. When Castle’s base came under heavy assault he had no choice but to indulge the voice as he massacred the invading troops. He was the only survivor of the attack. After undergoing surgery his memories of the battle would begin to fade due to amnesia and suppressed memories. The voice would also leave Castle but not before mentioning that his war was not over and a price would have to be paid.

Upon returning to the civilian world Frank Castle intended to spend more time with his loving family. But a family picnic would horrifyingly be turned into a brutal murder when he and his children witnessed a Mafia assassination. Seeking to eradicate all witnesses the Mafia family murdered Castles wife and kids, accidentally leaving Castle alive, who once again is the sole survivor of the horrific ordeal.

When the police were unable to take action against the murderers Castle decided to take matters into his own hands. If the law could not punish the killers then Frank Castle would. Using his extensive military training Castle began his one-man war on crime. Donning a white skull head over his chest, Frank Castle gave up his civilian identity and exclusively became the Punisher.

Unlike most heroes in the comic universe, the Punisher does not have any superpowers. He instead relies on his Marine training and extensive knowledge of all firearms. He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat and is a master of guerilla warfare tactics. He is also, continuously upgrading his weaponry which includes technology derived from Ant-Man, the Green Goblin, and Doctor Octopus.

The fact that the Punisher is unrelentingly brutal in his war on crime and frequently murders criminals, sets him apart from all of the other heroes in comics; resulting in him being seen as an “anti-hero.” His propensity to kill often brings him into direct conflict with other superheroes including Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Captain America and even Batman in a DC/Marvel crossover.

Unlike other superheroes who have villains that continuously come back as repeat offenders, ironically, the very nature of the Punisher killing off his opponents leads him to have few recurring villains. However, there are a couple of villains who do manage to survive encounters with the Punisher; include the gangster Barracuda, the Russian, and the ruthless deformed mobster Jigsaw.

Even without superpowers the Punisher remains the most violent and vicious anti-hero of the Marvel Universe. His brutal tactics and willingness to kill make him the scourge of the criminal underworld. While he may not be the most powerful of heroes, he is certainly among the most feared.
