Setting ground breaking new standards in film making, The Shaw Brothers took their success to Hong Kong and established Shaw Brothers Ltd. in 1957, completing a new production studio in 1961. They started off strong with The Magnificent Concubine earning awards at Cannes in 1962. Maintaining high production values, the studio managed to produce up to 40 films a year by filming with no sound. This allowed them to quickly adapt soundtracks for international market release.
Shaw Brothers opened the doors for greats in both directing and acting making a name for Hong Kong cinema around the world. With names like Jimmy Wang Yu, Chang Cheh and John Woo and films like Five Fingers of Death to their credit, Shaw Brothers was synonymous with Martial Arts films in the 60s and 70s.
Adding to their film success, the Shaw Brothers started a TV studio, TVB, in 1973. When the competition with other studios heated up in the 80s, the Shaw Brothers closed their film studios in 1983 and focused solely on TV production. They returned to film making in 1995 with Stephen Chow’s Out of the Dark, and other films like Hero in 1997 and Drunken Monkey in 2002.
