Al Simmons worked as an agent of the CIA that carried out special missions and assassinations. During one such mission Simmons was murdered by one of his teammates and his soul was sent to Hell. In Hell Simmons met a devil by the name of Malebolgia who made a deal with the dead soldier. In order to see his wife one more time, Simmons agrees to become a Hellspawn and lead Hell’s army against Heaven. Due to the nature of the Hellspawn, Spawn became a target of Heaven and Hell. Between the two forces, Spawn also made enemies of local crime lords due to his interference. A former Hellspawn named Cogliostro assists Spawn in learning how to harness the powers of the sentient suit. During the training with Cogliostro, Spawn learns that the necroplasmic power is limited and once it runs out he will lose his freedom and became a servant of Hell. Spawn also gained an ally from the side of Heaven in Angela, who initially came to destroy the Hellspawn and learned Spawn was more of a friend than foe.
Spawn’s most persistent foe has been the Violator, a vicious demon from Hell that is envious of Spawn’s position. Spawn also has run afoul of the mob cyborg Overtkill and Heaven’s own Anti-Spawn, the Redeemer. Usually working alone, Spawn has made unusual allies with the homeless of Rat City and shared a couple adventures with Batman and the WildC.A.T.S.
