Thanks to Superman’s uncle Zor-El, Argo city managed to survive Krypton’s destruction through the construction of a dome Zor-El designed that circled the city's perimeter. Through sheer luck, as Krypton exploded, a large chunk of the dying planet, containing Argo city and its dome, was hurled out into space. Unfortunately, the large chunk of Krypton that is hurtling through space, transforms into Krytonite, like the rest of the Krypton fragments. The Kryptonians line the asteroid with lead, protecting them from the deadly Kryptonite radiation, until a meteor shower rips through the lead lining, dooming the domed people. ...Show More
Zor-El and Alura In-Ze send their teenage daughter, Kara Zor-El, to Earth in a rocket, eventually to meet her cousin Kal-El, also known to Earthlings as Superman. In time Kara will eventually grow into the superhero known as Supergirl!
Wanting to keep her safe, Superman gives her the secret identity Linda Lee and has her stay at the Midvale Orphanage. There she keeps her powers a secret only helping Superman occasionally as his secret weapon until she gains full control of her powers. When Kara (Linda Lee) is adopted by Fred and Edna Danvers it is finally time to introduce Supergirl to the world. Kaera quickly proves herself a capable superhero in her own right and wins the hearts of citizens (and readers) everywhere.
Supergirl was unique in the fact that she noticeably aged. Going to high school and college and eventually taking on several jobs. In her many adventures she established a very colorful supporting cast. Some included were Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Jerro Merboy, a love interest from Atlantis, Comet a former centaur turned super powered horse, and of course fellow superheroine in arms Batgirl. Unfortunately she also acquired a very serious rogues gallery including Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Parasite, and Reactron.
Her character has gone through several alterations through the years starting with Supergirl's death during the Infinite Crisis story arc. In the Infinite Crisis story, Kara Zor-El is tragically wiped from everyone’s memory and from the very universe itself. However, DC Comics, the publisher of Supergirl and Superman comics, later realized that there is always a need for Supergirl, so they brought her back in a variety of forms, much to the chagrin of fans everywhere. First as Matrix, a protoplasm being sent to Earth from a pocket universe who eventually becomes Lex Luthor’s pet and love interest and eventually a member of the Teen Titans. Then Linda Danvers who was imbued with angelic powers. Power Girl is Supergirl's counterpart from a parallel Earth.
Luckily you can't keep a good Supergirl down and in 2003 Kara Zor-El was reintroduced into the DC Universe again as Superman's cousin from Krypton in the Superman/Batman comic book series. Looked after by Batman and Superman and trained by Wonder Woman Supergirl is a force to be reckoned with. Teaming up with teams such as Justice League of America and Teen Titans, as well as heroes Green Latern and Nightwing, Supergirl continues to fight to make the world a better place.
