Biography >> Superman

Deep in space, on planet Krypton, the infant Kal-El faced an unknown future. Kryptonian scientist Jor-El, knew what no one else on the planet would believe. Radioactivity within the planet’s core was causing the planet to self-destruct. Having no way to escape the planet, Jor-El and his wife Lara sent away their child Kal-El in a small prototype space craft as a last attempt to save their race. Jor-El programmed the ship to target a planet capable of sustaining life, and the tiny craft managed to escape the planet just before its complete destruction. ...Show More

Crash landing in rural Kansas, Kal-El was discovered by Smallville residents Jonathan and Martha Kent. Unaware of the child’s powers, but afraid for his future, the Kents adopted him, named him Clark, and raised him as their own. As he grew, they instilled within him the traits of truth and loyalty, while at the same time teaching him humility and to keep his powers a secret from society.

Because of Kal-El’s/Clark’s alien physiology, coming from a star system with a red sun, the cells of his body absorb energy from Earth’s yellow sun giving him tremendous powers and abilities: speed, flight, increased strength, acute hearing, X-ray vision and of course, near invulnerability, which lead to Clark’s popular nickname, “The Man of Steel.” Clark’s only weakness, a fatal one, is Kryptonite; radioactive meteorite rocks from his home planet Krypton. When exposed to Kryptonite, Clark, as well as all Kryptonians, undergoes radioactive poisoning that weakens his powers. Death is eminent when Kryptonians are exposed to too high of concentrations.

Clark grew up in Smallville as a “normal” teenager, keeping his abilities hidden from others, with the exception of his first love, Lana Lang. Struggling with his abilities and his identity, Clark traveled the world on a journey of self-discovery. He covertly used his abilities to help others while he sought to find his true purpose in life.

Settling in Metropolis, Clark was forced to reveal his abilities while saving a space plane on a crash-course. He adopted the moniker of Superman, given to him by the media. In Metropolis, Clark took employment as a reporter for the Daily Planet Newspaper under the direction of Editor Perry White, and alongside star journalist Lois Lane and rookie photographer Jimmy Olsen. Clark’s job allowed him to not only be on the front line of tragic headline news, but allowed him the flexibility to change into Superman in any moment of crisis.

But being a hero is never easy as there are always those seeking revenge. Superman has no shortage of powerful enemies including Darkseid, Doomsday and Kryptonian android Brainiac, but his most persistent foe is Lex Luthor, head of LexCorp. Hell-bent on destroying Superman, who accused him of being corrupt, Lex has made it his mission to defeat Superman at any cost.

Although Superman had originally refused to join the Justice League of America, fearing it would interfere with his ability to protect Metropolis, he now fights alongside Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash as a member (and unofficial leader) of the JLA. Once you learn to throw a building, catch a locomotive, stop bullets and gain control of your unbridled x-ray vision, you too can maybe wear the coveted royal blue Superman t-shirt, or any Superman t-shirt for that matter.
